About Crunch Fitness

The fitness center was established in 1989 by former stockbroker Doug Levine, and it didn’t take long for the club to gain popularity among young people and fitness buffs thanks to its clever marketing strategies and the fact that they’re able to produce results. In addition to providing members with top of the line fitness equipment, their unusual workout classes helped make them very popular with many fitness buffs.

In 2001, Crunch was purchased by Bally Total Fitness for $90 million, and four years later it was sold to the private equity firm Angelo, Gordon & Co. Four years ownership of the club transferred again, this time to New Evolution Fitness Company set up by Mark Mastrov, who helped co-found 24 Hour Fitness. Following this acquisition, additional locations were added, including UFC gyms.

The success story of Crunch is an example of what creativity can do for even a small business. When Crunch started in East Village, there was no air conditioning and they had no locker rooms either. However, the company was determined to make it work by making workouts more fun. To accomplish this, Crunch hired the services of creative fitness instructors who would make Crunch workouts fun but effective. The results were unique programs like Cyked Yoga Cycling, Co-Ed Action Wrestling, Hip Hop Aerobics and many others which the public took a liking to immediately. Word about the club’s No Judgment philosophy and the effectiveness of their workouts spread like wildfire in New York and the rest is history.

Today the company’s main headquarters is in New York City and currently has over 200,000 members. Because of their popularity, Crunch is planning an expansion program and already has a location in Australia and is into franchising as well.

Membership Fees and Benefits

The cost of membership will vary slightly depending on where you are, but on the average it is around $25. Once you are a member you’ll be able to use all their gym equipment including free weights, cardio and other machinery you’ll need to get a good workout.

There are several benefits to joining the club, not the least being the fact that you can avail of their saunas, number-based locker system and private shower stalls. In addition, each fitness club is manned by friendly staff that will be happy to answer any questions you may have. In addition to offering top of the line equipment, most memberships in their fitness center will give you access to the rest of their gyms in that particular area.

Those who join Crunch will also have the opportunity to attend their specialty classes like zumba, body sculpt, yoga and many others. One of their more popular classes, Aerial / Anti-gravity yoga is available too. By taking part in this class, you’ll be able to increase your physical strength and make your body more flexible.

While there are many different classes, all of them have been designed to be challenging and provide the results your body is looking for. Apart from those already mentioned, all Crunch locations have the popular classes and activities like Barre, Pilates, Pound, TRX and more. Furthermore, their instructors will guide you and help with other activities such as spinning and boxing.

Other Benefits for Members

There are a lot of other benefits to joining Crunch, including the use of the latest up to date equipment like their heavy ropes, monkey bars, and many others. In addition to all of these members will be able to make full use of the locker rooms that have keypad locks so there’s no need for you to bring one. In addition to these Crunch also provides sweat towels as well as free body wash, conditioner, shampoo, mouthwash and hairspray among others, and there is a dedicated staff who work to keep the gym clean.

Crunch is currently expanding the number of classes that are available for its members, and today the lineup includes Bi-Polar, which includes high intensity cardio workout along with a jump rope and sandbag, all of which are designed to make your body more flexible. Another popular workout class in Crunch today is Booty Kickin’ Step, a high energy workout that will have you taking part in step choreography, as well as do some clutch repeaters, hop turns and pivots. Finally, there is the Cardio Body Training class which will get rid of that extra fat, and if you’re really into punches and kicks, there’s their Cardio Tai Box to give you what you need.
